Lucy Jones (M. EERI, 2001) has been announced as the 2017 EERI Distinguished Lecturer, and will present at the 69th Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday, March 7, 2017.
Dr. Jones is recognized nationally and internationally as an authority on natural hazards and disaster risk reduction and recently served as the Science Advisor for Seismic Safety to Mayor Eric Garcetti and the City of Los Angeles.

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute is pleased to announce its Annual Student Paper Competition. The purpose of the competition is to promote scholarly involvement of students in earthquake engineering and the earthquake hazards research community.
The EERI Student Paper Competition is open to graduate and undergraduate applicants. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university and must be U.S. residents. All papers must be submitted by December 15, 2016, to the Student Paper Online Submission Form.
The graduate and undergraduate paper winners will be invited to the 2017 EERI Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon, March 7–10, 2017, and will receive a complimentary registration and a stipend to offset travel costs. The top paper winner in the graduate category may be invited to present at the Annual Meeting.
EERI seeks a dynamic, creative, experienced, and technology-aware Program Associate. This person will be a key staff member with internal and external responsibilities for multiple projects and programs. The Program Associate will also provide support or lead on a range of association activities such as webinars, annual meetings, conferences, and member and chapter relations.
The Program Associate must be self-motivated, flexible, an excellent communicator, and an outstanding team player. This position requires someone eager to learn and innovate, and ready to take responsibility. An interest in and knowledge of earthquake engineering and hazard risk reduction is highly desirable.
The Program Associate should be adept and comfortable working in a collaborative working environment. Some travel is required. The starting salary is $65,000 to $70,000, and is based on qualifications and experience.
EERI is a non-profit membership-supported technical association with an international audience. The Institute serves as the U.S. national society for earthquake professionals and undertakes a number of projects and programs for federal and international agencies and foundations, as well as internally funded projects that benefit the Institute and its 3,000 members. EERI is pleased to introduce the new EERI student chapter established in the Dominican Republic at Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra—Campus Santo Tomás de Aquino. The chapter's faculty advisor is Jaruselsky Pérez-Cuevas (M. EERI, 2016) Head of the Civil Engineering Department. The local professional contacts are Leonardo Pockels (M. EERI, 2016) and Ashley Morales-Cartagena (M. EERI, 2016). Sissy Nikolaou (M. EERI. 2004) and Guillermo Diaz-Fañas (M. EERI, 2015) will serve as professional advisors from the EERI NY-NE Regional Chapter. Recently elected officers include Javier Crespo Almanzar (President, M. EERI, 2016), Casandra Nuñez (Vice President), Julio Pimentel (Treasurer), and Marivid Rijo (Secretary).
The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) has one or two internship positions available for recent college graduates who are interested in gaining valuable professional experience while supporting the Institute’s mission to reduce earthquake risk. These positions can begin as early as November 2016. Applications should be submitted by October 19, 2016.
The approximately six-month internships offer engagement in a number of interesting EERI projects and Institute activities, including Learning from Earthquakes, the School Earthquake Safety Initiative, the EERI Annual Meeting, and technical seminars and webinars.
Tasks are varied, although day-to-day work focuses on supporting EERI projects and staff through research, project and event coordination, and website development and maintenance.
Internship candidates should have:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, science, architecture, or public policy.
- Familiarity and interest with issues in earthquake risk reduction
- Proficiency in Excel and Word
- Basic HTML skills and some knowledge of website development and maintenance (WordPress and Joomla), or willingness to learn
- Skills with graphic design programs such as Adobe InDesign or Illustrator
- Ability to take initiative and independently solve problems
- Curiosity, strong interpersonal skills, and a flexible attitude towards work
- Basic GIS skills and knowledge of GIS software (ArcMap, ArcGIS Online) or a willingness to learn
The interns will need to work in the EERI office, which means living in the San Francisco Bay Area. (No moving or housing support provided). EERI interns are provided a monthly stipend of $2,200.
EERI Post-Graduation internships are a great way to gain valuable professional experience, to be involved in meaningful projects related to seismic safety and risk reduction, and to make connections with EERI’s multi-disciplinary professional community. EERI is pleased to announce the opening of the Friedman Family Visiting Professionals Program for the 2016-2017 academic year. With the generous support of an endowment from the Friedman Family and supplemental support from FEMA, the program provides travel funding for expert professionals to visit a university to deliver a lecture that showcases their experiences in a professional career associated with earthquake engineering and earthquake risk reduction.
Student Chapters can choose from a list of 19 expert EERI professionals that span disciplines including seismology, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, insurance, emergency management, and public policy. Rank your top three professionals and briefly describe the reason for your choices in 300 words or less. Review of Student Chapter requests will begin on October 21, 2016, and occur on a rolling basis until all travel funds are awarded. Depending on funding availability, approximately six-ten trips will be funded for visits between January and June 2017.

The Office of California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. is seeking a geotechnical engineer to fill an open seat on the state's Alfred E. Alquist Seismic Safety Commission.
The Commission investigates earthquakes, researches earthquake-related issues and reports, and recommends to the Governor and Legislature policies and programs needed to reduce earthquake risk.
Among the duties of the Commission are: managing California's Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program; reviewing seismic activities funded by the State; providing a consistent policy direction for earthquake-related programs for agencies at all government levels; proposing and reviewing earthquake-related legislation; conducting public hearings on seismic safety issues; recommending earthquake safety programs to governmental agencies and the private sector; investigating and evaluating earthquake damage and reconstruction efforts following damaging earthquakes.

Professor Dan M. Frangopol (M. EERI, 1987) at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is looking for two Post-Doctoral Research Associates on projects related to life-cycle reliability, maintenance, health monitoring, management and optimization of civil and marine infrastructure systems. Candidates must have a Ph.D. and background and research accomplishments in structural engineering in one or more of the following areas:
Structural Reliability and Probabilistic Methods, Monitoring-Maintenance-Management-Cost of Civil and Marine Infrastructure (particularly bridges and ships), Structural Optimization, and Life-Cycle Engineering.
Lehigh University has internationally respected programs and outstanding structural research facilities including the Computational Laboratory for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering. The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at North Carolina State University (NCSU) expects to fill up to five tenure-track faculty positions over the next two years. The department seeks to augment its expertise by inviting applicants who can contribute to one or more aspects of sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Applications in all areas of civil engineering will be considered. At least one of the positions is expected to be in Structural Engineering. Successful candidates should be able to participate in multidisciplinary initiatives to support the missions of the department and the college. Applicants at all ranks are encouraged to apply, and exceptional candidates may be considered for an endowed chair position. An earned doctorate degree in civil engineering or a closely related field is required. Post-doctoral experience, professional experience, and a professional engineering license are desirable, but not required.
