Haruo Hayashi (M. EERI, 1997) was a recipient of the "Prime Minister's Commendation to Contributors for Disaster Prevention for FY2013" in September 2013. This high-level recognition is in acknowledgement of Dr. Hayashi’s intellectual and professional leadership in disaster management science.
Dr. Hayashi’s research on disaster management is widely published. The general focus of his work is on societal and human reactions to disasters, risk communication and education, information systems in disaster management, standardization of emergency operations, and multi-hazard risk assessment.
A long-time member of EERI, Dr. Hayashi has served as organizer of an ongoing series of joint international workshops on earthquake and other urban disaster reduction issues. Hayashi has received international recognition for the relevance of his work to the challenge of building more resilient societies around the globe.
Dr. Hayashi holds the position of Professor at the Kyoto University Graduate School of Informatics. He also belongs to the Research Center for Disaster Reduction Systems (DRS) at Kyoto University's Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) where he has taught since 1994. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Waseda University, and Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles.Back to top >

Join us at the EERI booth (space 741) at this year's AGU Fall Meeting at the Moscone Center (Hall D) in San Francisco, California, December 10–13, 2013.
The Institute invites EERI members who will attend the 2013 AGU Fall Meeting to stop by the EERI booth and connect with old and new colleagues. The EERI booth will feature a game, best-selling monographs, special and themed issues of Earthquake Spectra, and other resources. EERI staff will be on hand to provide meeting participants with information about the Institute.
The EERI booth is open: Tuesday to Thursday, Dec. 10-12, 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; and Friday, Dec. 13, 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
The Tenth U.S. National Conference on Earthquake Engineering (10NCEE) program committee has received nearly 800 papers from potential authors and presenters. Authors will receive review comments and confirmation of acceptance of their papers by February 1, 2014. Final revised papers will be due by March 15, 2014. Final submission of the paper must be accompanied by payment of the full conference registration fee for the presenting author.
The Student Leadership Committee (SLC) is proud to announce that 38 undergraduate-university teams have pre-registered for the 2014 Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition, which sets a new record. The biggest outdoor shake table in the world has received a Best of What's New award from Popular Science, the world's largest science and technology magazine. The project is featured in the magazine's December issue, now on newsstands.
The Large High-Performance Outdoor Shake Table can handle structures weighing up to 2,200 tons without height restrictions. The table's powerful hydraulic actuators can move at up to 6 feet per second, creating realistic simulations of the most devastating earthquakes ever recorded.
UC San Diego's shake table, housed at the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center in Scripps Ranch, California, has been used to test everything from wind turbines to masonry, wood-frame and precast concrete buildings, as well as non-structural building elements such as stairs, elevators and even hospital equipment.
The table is part of the George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation , or NEES, an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation and led by Purdue University. NEES has 14 such earthquake simulation sites across the country.
"The NEES-UCSD shake table is a unique and very important tool for knowledge discovery in earthquake hazard mitigation," said Joel Conte, a structural engineering professor at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego and one of the co-principal investigators for the shake table.
The 25-by-40-foot table is the largest in the United States and is used by researchers from around the nation.
"The research findings will have a profound impact on the seismic resilience of the built environment worldwide," said José Restrepo (M. EERI, 1997), also a UC San Diego professor in the Department of Structural Engineering and co-PI.

In late November, all EERI members (except student and honorary members) were sent via email the second membership renewal notice for 2014. The personalized email message provided a link to their personal renewal page showing contact information with options for selecting chapter membership and making a voluntary contribution to the EERI Endowment Fund.
In addition, a paper renewal notice was also sent to EERI members (except student and honorary members) via postal mail in mid November.
We hope you will continue to support EERI and renew your membership for 2014. Together, we can reduce earthquake risk for our communities.
