The 2018 EERI Annual Meeting was held concurrently with the Eleventh National Conference on Earthquake Engineering (11NCEE) in Los Angeles, California. Per EERI's Bylaws, the EERI Annual Meeting always contains an Annual Business Meeting component that took place on Wednesday, June 28, 2018. The live meeting was very brief to accommodate a large number of EERI honors and awards presented and the necessity to strictly adhere to the afternoon's full schedule of technical programming.
To ensure that EERI members have access to the full scope of content presented at the Annual Business Meeting, EERI President David Friedman (M,EERI,1988) and Secretary/Treasurer Lucy Arendt (M.EERI,2008) have recorded a video version that is now available on You Tube. The new format allows all EERI members access regardless of whether or not they attended the conference.

EERI Staff on the Move
Welcome Vida Samardžić, EERI Membership & Publications Coordinator
EERI is delighted to welcome Vida Samardžić to the team as our new Membership and Publications Coordinator.
Vida is an accomplished project administrator offering over seventeen years of experience in coordinating teams of diverse sizes and structure. With her background spanning through the entertainment, hospitality and tech fields, she developed strong business judgment and communication skills along with the capacity to work on strict deadline projects under high pressure. She is skilled in process review, regulatory research, planning, organizing, and implementing time efficient administrative solutions.
Vida holds an MA Degree in Arts and Culture Management from "Academy of Arts", Alfa University, Belgrade.

EERI Interns: You say good-bye and I say hello
Interns at EERI play an integral role in supporting the Institute while gaining hands-on experience. It is not uncommon for our interns to transition into professional positions with leading companies and academic institutions. Over the next two months, EERI bids farewell to three outstanding post-graduate interns whose tireless work and relentless dedication contributed significantly to the success of the 11NCEE. While Omar Plata (M.EERI,2015), Jorge Moreno (M.EERI,2018), and Julio Rios (M.EERI,2017) are leaving the EERI offices to embark on the next stage of their career, we welcome Ana Isabel Orozco (M.EERI,2018), our newest intern, who joined us in July.
Meet the interns:
Omar Plata
Omar got his BS in Civil Engineering at San Francisco State University (SFSU) and is a recent graduate from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) with an MS in Structural Engineering. Omar developed his passion for Civil Engineering when he worked as a construction worker alongside his father. During his time at SFSU, he and his team competed in EERI’s 2016 Seismic Design Competition and placed 7th place international and 2nd place in California. As an EERI intern, he has helped with LFE Reconnaissance Workshops, LFE Business Resilience, 11NCEE, and technical webinar series. EERI would like to thank Omar Plata for all his help and hard work, during the 11NCEE. He was also instrumental in making significant progress for EERI’s LFE Business Resilience project. We hope for the best of luck to Omar as he starts his new job at Rinne & Peterson, a structural engineering firm in Palo Alto, CA, as an entry-level engineer.
Jorge Moreno
Jorge graduated from the SEMM Master’s program at UC Berkeley with the support of the Fulbright scholarship. He completed his undergraduate studies at UNAM, and was able to undertake research activities at the Instituto de Ingenieria, in Mexico City. The September 19th, 2017 Earthquake in Mexico was a breakpoint that sparked his interest in earthquake mitigation strategies and development of resilient communities.
During his time at EERI, Jorge was supporting the World Housing Encyclopedia to update the report database and to develop the user-friendly WHE Wiki. Jorge played an important role in updating the Learning from Earthquakes website, the 11NCEE, and the translation of Confined Masonry guide into Spanish. EERI would like to thank Jorge for being invaluable in making the 11NCEE a great success. Jorge will work for Rutherford + Chekene in San Francisco, as an entry-level engineer. EERI would like to wish Jorge the best of luck as he starts his career.
Julio Rios
Julio obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) and completed Master’s studies at the same University with the support of Concytec scholarship. During 2017, he interned at Instituto de Ingenieria (UNAM) in Mexico City as a researcher. His motivation for earthquake engineering arose due to the seismic gap and high seismic risk to which Peru is exposed. He was a research assistant at PUCP and worked in some publications about site effects in Lima City. At EERI, he supported the transition to the new Learning From Earthquakes website, updated the Mitigation Center website, and helped with the 11NCEE organization, SESI activities, and the translation of WHE reports into Spanish. EERI is grateful for Julio's contributions to the success of the 11NCEE, and many EERI projects. Julio plans to continue his engagement in earthquake engineering by pursuing a Ph.D. He is currently looking for opportunities to continue exploring his research interest in Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs) and site effects evaluations after he leaves EERI.
Ana Isabel Orozco
Ana is a Civil Engineer who comes to us from Mexico, where she graduated from University of Guadalajara. She tells us that after the recent earthquakes struck her country, her passion to get involved and promote the importance of mitigating earthquakes has significantly increased. She has experience working on-site and intends to further develop her knowledge on sustainable earthquake-resistant materials. Ana comes to EERI with substantial knowledge, and committee members can expect to hear from her as she supports EERI's various programs and projects.

Call for Papers: 12th Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering
The Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering (CAEE) is proud to announce the 12th Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering that will be held in Quebec City, June 17-20, 2019. This is the most important international conference on seismic engineering to be held in Canada. It brings together researchers, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, architects, seismologists and regulatory bodies from all over the world every four years. The conference theme is "Improving Seismic Infrastructure Performance and Community Resilience." Topics include Seismic hazard, Seismology, Codes and standards, Seismic geotechnical issues, Seismic structural behaviour and design (bridges, buildings, dams, energy transportation lines, …), Seismic rehabilitation, Seismic mitigation systems, Societal impacts, Risk management, Dam safety, Machine learning applications for seismic reliability of structures and Structural health monitoring.
You are invited to submit abstracts through the submission system of the conference from now until September 15, 2018. Note that English will be the only official language of the conference.

PEER PHI Challenge - Register by August 15
PEER is organizing the first image-based structural damage recognition competition, the PEER Hub ImageNet (PHI) Challenge.
Register before August 15, 2018!
The goal of the PHI Challenge is to evaluate algorithms for structural image classification using a large-scale dataset based on service conditions, past reconnaissance efforts, and laboratory experiments for conditions of extreme events. For the PHI Challenge, PEER will provide a large image dataset which is relevant to the field of structural engineering, and will design several detection tasks, which will contribute to the establishment of automated vision-based structural health monitoring.

This presentation examines the ongoing human-caused seismicity in Oklahoma, Kansas and other parts of the central U.S. from an earthquake engineering perspective. Key questions to be answered include: Are these earthquakes different from natural (tectonic) earthquakes in important ways for earthquake engineers? Are these earthquakes large enough to cause damage to buildings and infrastructure? What is the impact of these earthquakes on seismic hazard and risk?
Abbie Liel, Ph. D. (M.EERI,2009)
Abbie is an Associate Professor of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She earned two undergraduate degrees from Princeton University, one in Civil Engineering and one from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Policy, starting her interest in uniting engineering and public policy. She started her graduate studies in the United Kingdom on a Marshall Scholarship, where she received a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering and a M.Sc. in Building and Urban Design and Development. Abbie did her Ph.D. at Stanford University, under the guidance of Professor Gregory Deierlein (M.EERI, 1989), focusing on collapse risk of older non-ductile concrete frame structures. At the University of Colorado, Abbie has worked on problems related to seismic performance of concrete buildings, snow loads on structures, and flood damage in the 2013 Boulder, CO floods, and induced seismicity, and advised 13 doctoral students. She has been the recipient of Shah Family Innovation Prize from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and recently received the Charles A. Hutchinson Memorial Teaching Award from the University of Colorado's College of Engineering.

A 1-Day Short Course
“Using DEEPSOIL: An equivalent linear and nonlinear seismic site response analysis software platform”

This short course will introduce the latest release of DEEPSOIL (V7) for seismic site response analysis (SRA). The course will provide attendees with a background on SRA and the development of the DEEPSOIL platform. It will cover the various modules available including motion processing, equivalent linear analysis, and nonlinear analysis with and without pore water pressure generation. The course will also include a number of hands-on exercises to gain familiarity with the development of model input and evaluation of analysis results.

EERI is proud to announce the call for nominations and deadlines for the following awards, which will be presented at the 2019 EERI Annual Meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada on March 5-8, 2019 (unless otherwise noted). In the past, EERI has published each annual awards' "call for nomination" announcement individually in The Pulse. This year, EERI has consolidated its annual award nominations into a single announcement, allowing members the opportunity to consider a complete suite of candidates whom they believe to be qualified and deserving.

The EERI Honors Committee is charged with developing recommendations for several awards. The committee greatly depends on nominations submitted by the members of the Institute and seeks help in identifying worthy members whose contributions should be recognized. Please consider submitting nominations to the Honors Committee by September 10, 2018, for these prestigious awards: The Alfred E. Alquist Special Recognition Award, Distinguished Lecture Award, George W. Housner Medal, and EERI Honorary Membership. Also due on September 10, 2018, are nominations for the 2017 Outstanding Paper Award for Earthquake Spectra (vol. 33), which will be reviewed by the Editorial Board of Earthquake Spectra.
Process for Submitting Nominations:
All nominations should be accompanied by a brief justification, and must be received by September 10, 2018, in order for the Honors Committee to complete deliberations and forward its recommendations to the Board of Directors. Call for Nominations for the 2019 Bruce Bolt Medal
The Bruce Bolt Medal is a distinguished honor awarded jointly by COSMOS, EERI, and SSA to recognize individuals worldwide whose accomplishments involve the promotion and use of strong-motion earthquake data and whose leadership in the transfer of scientific and engineering knowledge into practice or policy has led to improved seismic safety.
The COSMOS, EERI, and SSA Joint Nomination Panel is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Bruce Bolt Medalist. Nomination packets must be received by September 10, 2018.
Members of EERI, SSA, and COSMOS are encouraged to submit nomination packages for this distinguished award. Nominations will be reviewed in confidence by a six-person Joint Nomination Panel formed by two representatives from each of the three sponsoring organizations. Please note that current members of the Joint Panel are not eligible for nomination: Jose A. Martinez-Cruzado, Robert L. Nigbor, Maurice S. Power, Jon Ake, Robert R. Youngs, and William "Woody" Savage (Chair of the Bolt Panel). The recommended nominee will be considered in confidence by each organization’s Board of Directors for their approval and joint selection of the medalist.
If you know of a colleague or peer that you would like to nominate for this prestigious honor, please carefully review the nominee criteria and procedure.
The deadline to submit nominations for the 2019 award is September 10, 2018 (incomplete nomination packages will not be considered by the Joint Nomination Panel).

Submit Nominations for the 2019 Joyner Lecture by August 23, 2018
The William B. Joyner Memorial Lectures were established by the Seismological Society of America (SSA) in cooperation with EERI to honor Bill Joyner's distinguished career at the U.S. Geological Survey and his abiding commitment to the exchange of information at the interface of earthquake science and earthquake engineering.
Joyner Lecturers are chosen on the basis of their work at this interface, whether they are contributions from earthquake science to earthquake engineering or from earthquake engineering to earthquake science. The nomination deadline is August 23, 2018.
Sponsor Nomination
The sponsor of the nominee, with help from others, must clearly document the accomplishments of the nominee that foster and enhance communication at the earthquake-science/earthquake-engineering interface, and why their work makes a difference. The sponsor must prepare a written proposal providing a brief summary of the candidate’s professional history. It may include honors and awards, professional affiliations, lectures and publications, and professional service and experience that address the intent of the Joyner Award.
Nominations for the 2019 Joyner Lecturer should be emailed to the Joyner Lecture Committee by August 23, 2018 to: awards@seismosoc.org.

Apply for the 2018-2019 EERI/FEMA Graduate Fellowship in Earthquake Hazard Reduction by October 1, 2018
EERI is pleased to announce the availability of two Graduate Fellowships for the 2018-2019 academic year to support full-time students in a discipline contributing to the science and practice of earthquake hazard mitigation. The one-year fellowship, underwritten with funds provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is designed to foster the participation of capable individuals in working toward goals and activities of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program.
Award
The EERI/FEMA NEHRP fellowship provides a stipend of $12,000 that can be used for tuition, fees, research expenses, and the required attendance and participation at the 2019 EERI Annual Meeting, March 5-8, 2018, in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Criteria
Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university and must hold U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status. All applications must include an academic transcript and a statement of educational and career goals. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with active involvement in EERI.
All application materials must be submitted electronically to EERI, including a letter of nomination from a faculty sponsor at the student’s institution and two additional reference letters. Letters should evaluate the applicant’s recent academic performance, document the applicant's research accomplishments, and assess the candidate’s potential to contribute to the field.

2018 Shah Family Innovation Prize
Submit your nomination for the Shah Family Innovation Prize online by October 1, 2018.
Do you know a young academic or professional making a difference in reducing global earthquake risk? EERI members are encouraged to nominate candidates from government, private firms, academia, and the international community for the 2018 Shah Family Innovation Prize. The Shah Family Innovation Prize was created with a substantial gift to the EERI Endowment Fund by the Haresh C. Shah family of Stanford, California. The intent of the prize is to stimulate further creativity and leadership in the earthquake risk mitigation community and EERI. The selection process recognizes a combination of past accomplishments and future potential, emphasizing creative and innovative thinkers who have demonstrated at early stages in their careers the potential to make major contributions. EERI membership is not required for either the nominator or candidate, although it is strongly encouraged. Candidates must be less than 35 years of age on January 1, 2019.

EERI 2018 Undergraduate Student Paper Competition
EERI reminds students that we are now accepting submissions for the Undergraduate Student Paper Competition. The deadline to submit a paper is October 1, 2018.
The purpose of the competition is to promote active involvement of students in earthquake engineering and the earthquake hazards research community, and we encourage student authors to participate.
Please note that the Graduate Student Paper Competition has changed. EERI is no longer accepting submissions for the Graduate Category. Please visit the EERI Competitions web page for details.
The general rules of the Undergraduate Student Paper contest are as follows:
1. The paper must be directly related to earthquake engineering or earthquake hazard reduction.
2. The paper or extended abstract must not exceed four (4) pages in length inclusive of all figures, tables, photographs, appendices, and list of references. Exception: final papers from other programs, such as REU's, that are longer than 4 pages will also be accepted.
3. The paper must be authored by the student alone. In addition, a faculty member or other advisor can provide feedback before submission of the paper but may not co-author the paper. The advisor's name should be included in the "acknowledgements" section of the paper.
4. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university and must be U.S. residents.
5. A registration grant for the EERI Annual Meeting will be made available to the winning author, in addition to a small travel stipend, as long as funds are available. The winning paper may also be considered for publication in Earthquake Spectra.
6. Deadline: October 1, 2018
