2017-2018 EERI/FEMA Graduate Fellowships in Earthquake Hazard Reduction

fema logo 50EERI is pleased to announce the availability of two Graduate Fellowships for the 2017-2018 academic year to support full-time students in a discipline contributing to the science and practice of earthquake hazard mitigation.

The one-year fellowship, underwritten with funds provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is designed to foster the participation of capable individuals in working toward goals and activities of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program.

The EERI/FEMA NEHRP fellowship provides a stipend of $12,000 that can be used for tuition, fees, research expenses, and the required attendance and participation at the 2018 Eleventh National Conference on Earthquake Engineering and EERI Annual Meeting, June 25-29, 2018, in Los Angeles, California.

Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university and must hold U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status. All applications must include an academic transcript and a statement of educational and career goals. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with active involvement in EERI.

All application materials must be submitted electronically to EERI, including a letter of nomination from a faculty sponsor at the student’s institution and two additional reference letters. Letters should evaluate the applicant’s recent academic performance, document the applicant's research accomplishments, and assess the candidate’s potential to contribute to the field.

New Report on Pidie Jaya Earthquake

FRONTPAGE-BuildChange-AARGI-EERI-Pidie-Jaya-Earthquake-ReportA collaboration between Build Change, the Indonesian Earthquake Engineering Research Association (AARGI), and EERI has produced a new Learning from Earthquakes (LFE) reconnaissance report that summarizes impacts from the M6.5 Pidie Jaya Earthquake in Aceh, Indonesia on December 7, 2016.

The report covers a wide range of disciplinary topics, including emergency response, distributed infrastructure, building impacts, social impacts, and economic impacts.

Build Change designs disaster-resistant housing and schools in emerging nations and trains locals to build them, in order to reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses caused by building collapses in these regions due to earthquakes and typhoons.The Indonesian Earthquake Engineering Research Association (AARGI) is a network of Indonesian earthquake professionals, researchers, academics, and stakeholders committed to reducing seismic hazards in Indonesia.

The report authors include: Lizzie Blaisdell Collins (M.EERI,2013), Build Change, Elwahyudi (Build Change), Edwin Lim (M.EERI,2011), Mediatrich Triani Novianingsih (Build Change), Muhammad Riyansyah (AARGI), and Hartanto Wibowo (M.EERI,2007), Iowa State University.

New Kumamoto Lifelines Report from TCLEE

kumamoto reportOn April 16, 2016, a M7.0 earthquake occurred near Kumamoto, Japan. This earthquake resulted in 70 fatalities, thousands of injuries, and various types of damage to more than 10,000 structures.

There was also a wide range of damage to lifelines. Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering (TCLEE) members, Alex Tang (M.EERI, 1985) and John Eidinger, have written a 280-page report on the performance of lifelines in this earthquake, including electric, gas, water, telecommunications, transportation and ports. The report is available for download on the EERI Kumamoto Japan Earthquake Virtual Clearinghouse.

EERI San Diego Chapter - March Events Recap

san diego event.smallThe EERI San Diego Regional Chapter organized two successful events at the end of March that attracted more than 150 attendees from California and other parts of the world.

The 2nd Workshop on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering took place at the University of California, San Diego, on March 29-30, 2017. The workshop,“Dealing with the Consequences of Liquefaction,” featured 23 speakers from the USA, Japan, England, New Zealand, Chile and Canada. The workshop honored the lifetime achievements and contributions of Professor Kenji Ishihara. EERI and ASCE- GeoInstitute presented Prof. Ishihara with recognition plaques. Gold Sponsors included RMA Group and Hayward Baker.

The second event was a 1-day short course held March 28, 2017 on the UCSD campus, “Liquefaction: From Site Characterization to User-Friendly Computer Programs,” presented by Prof. Ahmed Elgamal, Dr. Michael Fraser, and Dr. Jorge Meneses. About 65 students attended.

The Organizing Committee, chaired by Dr. Jorge Meneses (M. EERI, 2006), a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with RMA Group and President of the EERI San Diego Chapter, was composed of a group of dedicated PhD students from UC San Diego and UC Los Angeles. Full job description and application instructions

The University of California, San Diego, Department of Structural Engineering seeks candidates for the position of Research Scientist to lead the research operations and implementation of innovative structural testing methods at the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center. The candidate is expected to contribute to and support the research mission of the laboratory as well as attract and mange experimental programs from industry. Research expertise in structural dynamics, experimental mechanics, and controls, particularly as related to structural and seismic testing is desired. The candidate must be well versed in the operation of servo-hydraulic control systems and data acquisition/instrumentation systems, and have knowledge of modern cloud computing for data exchange, storage, retrieval and post-processing; as well as dynamic scheduling and budgeting methods to allow smooth collaboration with national partners. The Center is home to the Large High Performance Shake Table (LHPOST), the largest shake table in the US, and the Blast Simulator Facility among other structural and geotechnical testing facilities. The mission of the Englekirk Center is to provide the structural engineering community with a world-class testing facility producing high quality experimental data as well as consultation on experimental design and training/education. The LHPOST is currently a national shared-use experimental facility as part of the National Science Foundation supported Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program.

An earned doctoral degree or advancement to candidacy in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, or a related field is required at the time of application. Entry-level candidates for a Research Scientist (non-instructional) will need to demonstrate that their research trajectories are likely to position them to become independent scientists within a few years after appointment, while mid-senior level candidates will be expected to have a track record of independent peer-review research. EERI 2017 Post-Graduate Internship

Final Notice! Applications are due May 31, 2017. The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) has an internship position available for recent graduates who are interested in gaining valuable professional experience while supporting the Institute’s mission to reduce earthquake risk. 

EERI's internships offer engagement with a number of interesting EERI projects and Institute activities, including Learning from Earthquakes, the School Earthquake Safety Initiative, annual meetings and conferences, and technical seminars and webinars.

EERI’s internships are approximately six-months long and provide a monthly stipend of $2,200. These positions can begin as early as June 30, 2017. Please submit your application by May, 31 2017.

The NHERI Summer Institute

ds-logo-horizThe inaugural NHERI Summer Institute will be held on July 24-28, 2017 at University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The five-day workshop is for K-12 educators, engineers, and researchers who want to learn more about the Natural Hazards Engineering Research (NHERI) community.

Summer Institute participants will be exposed to collaborating with NHERI experimental sites, networking with engineers, researchers, and educators interested in natural hazards engineering, and creating useful grant proposal drafts and lessons during the program.

Participants will attend sessions on:

  • The mission of the NSF-funded NHERI program
  • Writing a grant proposal through grant writing & design workshops
  • Requesting research resources within the NHERI network
  • The NHERI Science Plan
  • Computational research and data management through hands-on participation.

Cost to attend is free, and the NHERI award covers travel expenses for a limited number of early career faculty members (i.e., non-tenured professors) and early career professionals. For more information and to apply for limited travel funding, please visit the DesignSafe-CI website.
